Call for artists: Fire Dancing Expo, April 26, SF

Each year, National Dance Week encourages the growth and development of Dance in America by raising the public consciousness to the values, importance and contributions of Dance to our daily lives and culture. Temple of Poi and PoiGeek are committed to supporting this valuable mission by creating an affordable opportunity for performers and audiences alike to appreciate the beauty, grace and brilliance of fire dancing by sponsoring a free-to-the-public, affordable-for-artists fire dancing show on San Francisco's landmark Union Square stage.

Temple of Poi and PoiGeek are proud to sponsor the 3rd annual Temple of PoiGeek Fire Dancing Expo as an opportunity for the global fire dancing community to perform for an enthusiastic, appreciative, receptive audience in San Francisco. Last year's event was selected by Bay Area National Dance Week as a Cornerstone Event, one of 4 San Francisco based events selected from almost 300 events held during National Dance week.

Because Temple of Poi and PoiGeek understand how challenging it can be to find safe and affordable venues in which to showcase fire dancing performance, we are creating this opportunity for artists to have a gorgeous 30 ’x70’ concrete, outdoor stage! We invite you to bring your best fire dancing performance art and strut your stuff for our live crowd and video cameras.

We’ll pay the cost and handle the logistics for fire and sound permits, space rental, press, marketing, fuel, spin out areas to give you an amazing opportunity to perform in front of a large crowd in a city that loves fire dancing. All this in exchange for your time on the stage! And if you’d like a record of your performance, we will be offering footage at the rate of $50 per 5 minutes of footage of your performance to use as you please. We will not be using the footage to make a DVD that we will sell, though we may put some clips on YouTube to inspire the world over with your fabulous performances!

Full Details, Guidelines and Application available here:

The Uncanny Art Party in Davis

Remember the cannery art party last year? The cannery may be demolished, but the party lives!
In a field behind 6964 Vineyard Ln in Davis off road 98, from 7pm to 1am, Mathias (art professor at UCD) will be holding a very city-ok'd bash full of art and 500+ people. Last year there was over a hundred different art pieces of varying mediums; a chill dome; free water, juice and red bull; fire dancing next to a DJ stage; and several other wild experiences that grant legitmate uses of semicolons in their description. No entry fee required - donations welcome. I talked to Mathias and fire is very welcome, I'll set up a free space for everyone to play in. Try to think up something special: bring a fire safe surface and squirt bottle to write and draw fire on, or bring a garden sprayer of fuel, or a nomex suit, or something. Test out its parameters first, then message or call (5309087532) me and we can work on integrating it.
Or just bring some fuel and shake your thing.
The website for the event is http://design.ucdavis.edu/transfer/uncanny
And Fire University's regular Thursday fireplay will not be held at the plaza, we'll be at The Uncanny

Yep, I finally lost one of my awesome giant heavy monkey fists. Leather handle, ball chain. I think that I left the free burn area with them both, but only one made it home. If you found one, or someone you know found one, I would love it back, its twin is lonely:(

Fire Arts Direction for DJ Stage at WEF 07

I will be directing the fire arts relative to the DJ Stage. This will be in front of Walker Hall, which is diagonally across the street from the southwest corner of the quad. Fire will be held religiously between 8 and 10PM, but premature burning will be allowed as darkness permits. The Free Burn will happen as it should on the Southwest Quad under the direction of empty (Jordan) to the sound of a drum circle. Two of the most excellent spaces imaginable will be provided for you to showcase fire and talent, but NO FUEL WILL BE HANDED OUT. Bring whatever amount of fuel matches your vision of how bright you and your community can shine.
There will be a meeting at the completed DJ stage at 6PM on Thursday (5/10) to assess the space and brainstorm possibilities and contingencies regarding fire play-all are welcome to attend. After 30-45 minutes of idea-having we will hold palaver with the DJ stage's main director, DJ Tao, to finalize the layout and details with all possible perspectives weighed.
The DJ stage will pander to choreographied and structured pieces. The spaces between sets will be filled with improvisation and choas that respects practice, safety, and the audience's viewpoint more so than would be expected of play in the Free Burn space. The TENTATIVE plan is this:
Friday
8:30 - 9 Chucknasty + Allegro (Shy)
9:30 - 10 Flux
Saturday
8:30 - 9 Solar Flare
9:30 - 10 NoelSki + his crew
This is only a sketch designed to convey the loose concept of when set pieces will be executed, but notice the half hours before and in between for play time. To request consideration for reserved space, call me at (530)908-7532. I work 8AM - 5:30PM everday, so details will be resolved at night. Bliss Butterfly (Tamara) will be producing a performance in the Free Burn, but will not be involved with the administration of fire. Feelings may get hurt and favoritism will be practiced, but it will not be according to my ego but my belief in fire:
With fire I see the better forms of humanity arise. I see the lost become found. I see relationships metamorphose into something symbiotic. I see the child remembered. We all become pioneering dancers, adventurous engineers, accidental students, and entranced audiences at the same instant. I want Fire Art to shift ambient temperatures upon geographies, I want fuel supplies brought into question, and I want it visible from space!
If you're using fire simply to draw attention to yourself, then it's like lying: you take one a our greatest gifts of community and twist it to serve only you. Those who embody what I value in fire will be granted the greater consideration.

I don't know whether you guys (and girls) discuss poi moves in these discussions. If you don't, please LMK. Anyways, I've never done poi before, but I did something similar, and I was wondering if poi was limited to a certain number of moves. This might seem like a stupid question, but beside the weave, windmill, crossover, butterfly, antispin flower, buzzsaw, btb etc., are there any derivations from that style?

once again, I haven't seen any threads like this, so if this is against the rules, would the mod(s) please kill this thread?

Beginner - Advanced Poi Fire Dancing Lessons in Sacramento (filmed for Sacramento News!)

Greetings all! I have some students who have moved out to Sacramento so I'm going out there to teach them some stuff. There are some other spaces available in the class, so maybe you can join us too? The workshop will be held in Mather in one of my student's home (thank you DC!) so space is limited.

Also, I spoke with an anchor from KCRA who may very well be covering the explosion of fire dancing on the news, so you'll have to be okay with being filmed to television is you take the class. :)

Details follow:

Where:
Mather, CA 95655 (specific address given after registration funds are received to protect my student's home)

What:
The following poi sessions will be taught by Isa "GlitterGirl" Isaacs, founder of Temple of Poi, the premier poi fire dancing school in the world:

Sunday, April 8, 2007 from Noon - 6 PM

Session I: Noon - 1:20: Beginner/Advanced Beginner
Session II: 1:30 - 2:50: Beginner/Advanced Beginner/Intermediate
Session III: 3:00 - 4:20: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced
Session IV: 4:30 - 5:50: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced

What We'll Teach
Our fire dancing education session will begin with a discussion of poi practices and mindset created for success. For beginning poi artists, we will focus on fundamental movement principles as well as ensuring the artist has the basic moves in all directions. Then we'll work on how to transition between same and split direction movements as well as flowing between moves.

For intermediate and advanced Poi artists: Not only we will focus on honing skills (wall plane, multibeat, behind the back, polyrhythmic, split direction, etc.) we will work with combinations of moves and the flow between them. After all, what good does it do you to have a move that you can't string together with other moves? We will introduce some of our poi theory that explains how to understand more fully how to connect moves together and then we'll introduce some slick transitions (stalls, wraps, etc.) and some combos of moves you can use (and reuse like moves themselves) in your performances to add flair and fun to your poi play and performance time.

Please note: The Beginner sessions require you purchase access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program or have equivalent experience. All Beginners must complete the computer based training prior to May 9. This will maximize your investment at the training. The opening of the training will be a review of everything covered in the computer based training program and then we will build from there.

What to Bring
Please bring water, snacks and food as necessary, your poi, your flow journal, and your final tuition payment in cash. We will also have additional light poi available for purchase ($70) so bring cash for that as well.

Tuition and Materials
Sessions are priced as follows:
$40 1 session
$75 for 2 sessions
$100 for 3 sessions
$125 for 4 sessions

Optional discount for students $25:
access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training (regularly priced at $90)

Optional package discount for beginners for $65:
access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training (regularly priced at $90)
a set of practice poi (add $7 if you want them shipped in advance to your location (in continental US))
a flow journal (shipped with your practice poi).

For more information and registration, please visit the Temple of Poi web site at this link:
http://www.templeofpoi.com/workshops/SacApril07.php

Thanks for reading and I look forward to playing with you soon!
:)

Come and visit our new sites, fire artists and spectators alike~! We are building a dream

>>>>>> tribes.tribe.net/shivavista
~~~ join the tribe to keep up-to-date and submit requests for performance/activities
>>>>>> www.shivavista.com
~~~ visit our website to read all about the project, view arist renderings of the completed installation, find out how YOU may be able to help, and see pictures of the progress as we build our dream for all to experience!

The Shiva Vista Project is an art installation *by* fire performers *for* fire performers at night and for other individuals and groups during the day. Shiva Vista will create an atmosphere for fire performers, theatrics, sunrise yoga, circus entertainers, poetry, fashion shows, etc. to play, interact, and display their talent six feet above the playa for all to see their evolution, their transformation from one year to the next. When the Shiva Vista is not being used for scheduled performances, it will be available to anyone to use for meditation, shade, drumming, as well as spontaneous fire art and beyond.

History and inspiration...
Shiva is one of three aspects of the Hindu trinity representing divinity. Brahma is the first aspect, considered the creator, Vishnu the second aspect considered the preserver and Shiva, the destroyer. Shiva's function is to destroy all the worlds at the end of creation and dissolve them into nothingness, void, from which point Brahma again creates the world, completing the circle of life. Shiva is responsible for change, both in the form of death and destruction and in shedding old habits to start anew. Shiva's destruction is positive, that of nourishment and construction that builds and transforms life and energy for the welfare of the world and all that inhabit it. Shiva destroys to renew and regenerate. This is the destruction of an artist, a surgeon, a cook; evolution. Through destruction is facilitated the smooth transition of things and events from one stage to another.

The Shiva Vista project represents the theme at Burning Man this year and the continued evolution of Controlled Burn and the Fire Conclave Convergence Camp in the sense that this installation is intended to be built this year and used over the next couple of years, facilitating change, evolution, the shedding of old and creation of new, recycling and the circle of all life. Additions to the original structure are in the design process and will be added for Burning Man 2008, at which time it will be burned as it was designed to do, fulfilling the inevitable departure from existence into nothingness and oblivion!

You can also read a recent write-up in the Reno Gazette Journal, outlining the project and promoting our first fundraiser at
www.rgj.com/blogs/its-yo...or-shiva.html

FireDrums IV Sept 28 - Oct 1

FireDrums IV Sept 28 - Oct 1
Message
FireDrums IV
Thursday, September 28th - Sunday, October 1st, 2006

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 1st gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. We have conveyed to Cutters how wonderful and respectful everyone has been at our past 3 gatherings and that FireDrums is not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to www.firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than past FireDrums gatherings.
i am a hippie folk kinda girl and love the fire. i'd ideally love to stay in a co-op, but it seems they are very small.
does any one have any suggestions as to where is best to kick it?
anything would be helpful.
also maybe someone needs a roommate?

Hello,

I’m letting all of the tribes know about a regional event coming up soon – Rebirth. Burning Man, but rather than radical desert survival – radical tropical rain forest survival. Details of the event can be found here:

http://www.kapilina.org/bigisland/rebirth2006.html

Hawaii… Fire spinning capital of the world… Big Island… Hot tub ponds heated by thermal vents… Black Sand Beaches… LAVA… REAL LAVA! And a Burning Man regional event.

I’ve tried to figure out how to reduce costs as much as possible for everyone coming over from the mainland (if you can think of anyother suggestions please post):

This week Davis practice will be out on the Quad again. Our permit is for 6-10 pm so we have four full hours of firey freedom!

We'll need community action on bringing out the fire box, bringing fuel, marking out our fire area with tape, and getting (and returning) the water buckets.

This week's practice will be on the UC Davis Quad, yes I said the QUAD. We are well on our way to being legal and legit! Matt and I talked with the Asst. Fire Chief at UCD on friday and I've been the the events office today and am headed to the UCDFD now to complete the paperchase. We are signed onto the Quad as our practice space when we want it every single thursday 7-10 until Dec 8th. We are getting permitted (I'll pick it up thursday morning) for this week, and assuming it goes well, they will issue us a permit for every other week after that (then we can do alternating weeks at that apt complex by the park).

So Davis fire fiends, wash behind your ears and be on good behavior!

SaDa Fuego is planning to meet at 6 pm to work on the show that we're doing on friday night. Join us then, play with fire 7-10, the unwind at the delta perhaps.

Yipppeee!

DAMN THE MAN ..and.. where can we practice?

DAMN THE MAN:
ugh
so as most of you might already know thursdays fire was cut short when my friend christian lit up 3 juggling torches at sundown...

he had small wicks and was soaked in lamp oil -- looked as if he was "juggling candles" as someone more clever then me said

the coppers sped over the grass hill with their lights on and jumped out of their car. They told us that that we know why they are there, and 'no more fire'... no sweet talking or number of fire extinguishers would have changed ther minds.

they took christians name and address so they could have it on file and maybe talk to him later-- but said they wouldnt change him.

gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

WHERE CAN WE PRACTICE?

matt -- you spoke of a parking lot near the vet building?
perhaps if we approached the university as the damento juggling club (i got connections) and stressed how safe and cool we were we could use it?

anyone know of any other parking lots that are pretty empty at night that we could try to secure? either by talking to the owner.. or.. maybe we would need to talk to the F.D.? tell them about our situation -- artists with no where to practice... that we offfer a safe community enviornment .. but that we cant shell out $60 a week

anyone know of any super isolated parking lots in daivs?

anyone in davis have a backyard they can offer?

gahhhhghahgahahhhhh

Hey everyone,
Sorry I didn't get to see anyone in the morning, but when 8am rolls by and I feel like I'm still okay to drive I need to take that opportunity. Loads of fun though (even without the help we were all looking for).
I don't remember getting hit when I was sparring, but I sure must have... my legs are all kinds of beat, splits on my shins, some big welts and bruises elsewhere. Good times. Hopefully I didn't land on anyone else.
Thursday in the park still on?

Thursday Practice at the Domes Party! 9/29

Hey Guys and Gals,

I just got a formal invitation from the Domes, a housing coop on campus, for us to come and spin at thier annual openhouse on thursday, aka gin and tonic party. Funk outside to dance too, and different djs in some of the domes as well. I've been to this party the last couple of years, spun it last year too. Its pretty fun, a nice group of hippy coop-ers and burners. Festivities begin at 4:20, dress in _white_ !!

I vote strongly that we move practice there! Its just a few blocks away from the park.

The Domes are just past the corner of Russel and Orchard Park, which is one block towards downtown from our usual turn at Sycamore (rt turn from 80). You'll see them on the right, cute little white domes.

So, the question is, should we show up there for practice and fire at 7, or meet at the park first, practice, them swarm in for GnT and fire as a group??

What do ya'll think?:)

Hey Fire Family,

Time to regroup in our home space! I loved seeing some of you and missed others out on the playa and I just can't wait to get back to practice here. We have such a wonderful little posse, it will be great to reconnect practice, bring our new inspirations and share stories.

Practice this week, Oxdford Circle Park, 7 pm on thursday.

Who's in?

Who else is still dizzy from the playa?
.... that asked....
BM peoples, ya'll got time for one more burn with us before ya'll go out on the playa? Big Kid's park as usual?
I'll likely be late as I'm picking up my kids from the airport, and possibly my Romanian friend.

and Sunday.... anyone interested in a practice? If so, I could be enticed to host.

thanks to tammara, aja, and matt!

last night i was able to spin fire for the first time..... borrowed aja's poi, and a mix of both matt's and tammara's fuel... thank you, thank you, thank you.....
i'm soooo addicted now!
kept to the simple moves - as those are really all i know - but had a lot of fun adding the fire aspect to the moves.... the WHOOSH and heat were so awesome! i now need to get or make my own fire poi....... and play a LOT more

I don't know how to do the thread thingy so i just cut and paste, this post is originally in Sacramento Fire Arts

So ya'll shoulda told all your none spinning friends about my classes by now .. * wink*

So here's a lil' reward for all us skilled spinners.....

45 sweet minutes in a studio to work out our kinks and find some new thrills.

From 9 in the pm to 9:45. late huh? oh well ...
this includes a 15 minute warm up period at 9 so I can wrap up my staff class ... this should be fun .... I'm not charging anything for this time but will be accepting free will donations. O yea, I guess I should toss in this disclaimer.... this space is meant for those advanced spinners hoping to coordinate a cohesive fire dance troupe. to me this means that you know your shit and are willing to put your skills to the test. what test? I don't know but we'll figure it out, and you can be ther most Weds (did I write that without sounding too offensive?)

So we have this nice big ball of fire and its rolling , rolling, rolling so lets not let it get away! Lets blow up Sacto with some skilled fire performances ...

and thank you and thank you again to the folks who came out and lent their energy and skills to making wef toy-ish. i had many current and old staff members express gratitude that we FInally had people playing with toys at festival. everyone was happy with it and things went GREAT.

i also got great feedback on the fire jam. anselm, much appreciation for your organization and work. and lsdfuego--i heard a *bunch* of people being all super-stoked that you lent your flames down at the dj stage.

sorry for those of you (matt!) who came out sunday only to find things soggy. hooping + rain = muddy yucky tapeless hoops, so i didn't set my stuff out, and in general i think the people who attended festival on sunday were there to either shop or to see a specific band, not so much to hang out on the lawn in the lovely weather :P

hope to dance with you all again soon...

hey kids
anyone who wants a WEF early start on circus arts and dancing should head down to the "Wellman Pit" (west of the quad infront of the wellman classroom -- but not on the quad side of the classroom)
there will be:
a dj
BRING YOU POI AND DANCE :-)

and uh.. if not.. see you cool kids at 12noon at the toyspace booth :-D and/or in the evenning at the burn

Whole Earth Festival Update

Ok! I've definately got tiki torches, and have officially got tiki torches- we're good to burn! As mentioned, prolly about 8:30 or 9:00 on the Quad. In the past it's been on the South-West portion (if they library's at your back, you're facing north), so I assume it'll be there again, but it's always an issue of "where is there room?"

Here are a few things I would like someone/people to bring, if possible: Towels; Buckets; Fire extinguishers; Fuel (I usuallyl use whitegas, aka "Coleman fuel"). Especially the towls and fuel are important, everything else we can borrow if necesary, but for once I'd like to leave all the extinguishers where they belong, if you know what I mean....:P

If nobody anounces that they'll bring fuel, then I'll bring some, cause we NEED that. But I'd rather not, since I'm putting this on my own dime, and I probably won't be actually spinning myself, or at least not much, so if people could kick in and bring a galon or two total, that would be bomber.

Other than that... well, I keep hearing back from more and more people, this should be an epic year!

Cool! See you all on the quad this Saturday!!

Burning at Whole Earth

So, I'm new here. Some of you might have met at Whole Earth Festival last year, or else somewhere in Davis during the year. My name is Anselm, and I've been running the WEF fire circle for the past three years. There's been another thread going on about this subject, but I'd like to make sure that people see this.

First off, let me make clear that I am NOT trying to step on anyone's toes! Some poeple here have been talking about organizing a burn, and that's great! But let's co-ordinate so that we end up with one big one, rather than several smaller ones that compete. Also, the WEF crew knows me and is expecting me to do this, so I have a fairly easy time getting things pushed through:)

In the past, it's always been the sort of thing where I show up with a gallon of coleman fuel, a wet blanket, fire extinquisher and buckets and fly it from there. I've been talking to Matt a bit, and it seems that we'll have a large number of burners this year, many of whome have been doing this for years. Partly because of this, and partly because we've been doing some things in the past that were apropriate for than, but now so much for the ever-growing circle, I'd like to change a few things this year.

1) I'd like to build a perimeter. I have acces to a huge amount of fabric rope, which I was thinking about staking out about three feet off the ground in a massive circle. This keeps the crowd at bay, and keeps them away from from...

2) Tiki Torches! I want to get away from the haphazard lighting of torches (often WAY to close to the fuel!), as well as minimize lighter flashes. To this end, I was thinking of putting up some tiki torches a couple of feet in from the circle. This gives people plenty of chance to light up in safety, and would look bomber!

3) Establish a clear entry. If we take part of the roping out in a neck, we can keep people out of it if someone needs to make a quick exit, and keeps spinners with freshly dipped (and dripping) wicks from having to pick a path between the audience. Good idea in general:)

In the past, my policy has been to quiz people before they go out to make sure they're safe. No, it won't be stuff like "what temp. does whitegas burn at?", but more like "how long have you been spinning? Are you sober? What do you do if you catch fire? Do you FEEL safe?" I think these are reasonable questions, and they allow me (or anyone else running a circle) to quickly asses a person's competence.

If anyone wants to work with me, either beforehand to organize things, or during the show, that would be great! Personally, I've always run myself, just so everything goes through one person, which keeps confusion to a minimum.

I've been burning for seven years now, and although I haven't been doing much spinning lately, I've performed with many people from many walks of life, from Santa Cruz' Pheonix Rising to local beginers. I've always been very careful, and have never had an accident that resulted in more than singed hair, either on myself or on anyone in a show I was running. I don't know if I will be hauling the ol' staves out for this show, but I will certainly be safetying and officiating (as it were). Please, come out! It's huge fun! And if I seem like a hard-ass... I'm sorry, I just want to make it possible for as many people as possible to spin. I have a long and loving relationship with fire, from spinnning to bonfires to firewalking and body transfers. I want to see it continue through the generations in safety and in glorious joy.

this is my official set-o-details for the whole earth festival shindiggity-dog that's going down may 6, 7, and 8. so thanks for inquiring and/or offering assistance! i'm much obliged.

1. tOYsPaCE!
on saturday may 7th i'm going to be running a skillshare/playshop space on the quad. i'll be getting it started by 11 or noon, and running it till it gets dark or people get bored, whichever comes first. the space will be located on grass, in and out of shade. it'll be called TOYSPACE, if you're trying to find it.

i need people to just drop in to play and teach. (in particular right now, i am hoping that teachers of staff, juggling, and other things i'm not thinking of will show up despite the fact that i don't know about them.)

i'm going to try to have extra poi, hoops, staffs, and juggling balls lying around, but **any that you can bring will be appreciated!**. orrrr, if you have materials for making toys hanging around, bring those and we'll put them to good use :)

toyspace will also be happening on sunday, morning til 5ish.

2. FiRe!
fire shows on saturday night are going to be coordinated by anselm. similar to last year, the fire circle will be on the quad lawn away from the stages. we're going to try to have a more delineated perimeter this year, and there will be a definite
emphasis on saaaafetyyyyyy. so be good and bring a towel and such :)

the format is just going to be a jam--no troupe or specific show. it'll be pretty informal, but if you get a chance please drop a line to anselm and let him know you're interested.

the festival only goes til 10, so fire will start around dark and go til then. please help us out by ceasing all flaming ac-tiv-i-tease at 10pm preeeecisely.

3. LOgIStiCs
if you're going to come help with playspace, i will feed you. if you help for a long time, i'll give you a whole earth t-shirt.

if you're just coming to do fire, i don't know that i can do the food thing, but if you think you're going to need food message me and we'll figure something out.

since i don't live in davis anymore, my options for housing large groups of people are noticeably less plentiful than they used to be. that said, if anyone needs to crash in davis that night and has no other resources, i might be able to help. see, unfortunately, davis doesn't have any public camping. the closest is a KOA in sac.

if anyone who gets this has space to host, maybe you could message me and i'll repost?

did you read the first time when i said BRING EXTRA TOYS FOR PEOPLE TO PRACTICE WITH? cuz if not i hope you saw it this time. again, *highly* appreciated.

4. dIRecTiONs aNd SuCH
the whole earth festival is held on the uc davis quad. the campus is in the middle of davis. if you take 80 to the uc davis exit or downtown davis exit and get off the freeway, it won't take you too long to find it. it's on the north side of the freeway. there's also an amtrak stop in davis, should you care to use transit. if
you can't find campus or the quad, anyone in town will know where it is and (hopefully) know that festival is happening, so just ask.

i will be in davis saturday morning, but probably not before. find me when you get to the quad. if you're good with this sort of thing, i'll be on the southwest corner of the quad. or, if you're normal, find the big green dome or a person in a staff tshirt and ask them if they know where toyspace is. or if they know where i
am. (btw, my name is maryann.)

is that all? probably not. let me know if you have questions!

FESTIVAAAAL!!!

so whole earth is coming right up. mother's day weekend, of course, which this year is may 6, 7, and 8.

if you haven't been or haven't heard, the whole earth festival is a three-day free festival in davis. it is managed and put together by a small staff of volunteers and semi-payed amateurs who strive to abide by the principles of sustainability, non-violence, and community as they plan. check out the website: wef.ucdavis.edu.

i've been on staff of the festival for a long time, and this year i'm deTERmined to put together a toy space (similar to chela mela meadow at oregon country faire). i am putting together a forum for people who do toys to teach, demo, workshop, and otherwise encourage folks to play.

the festival is all vegetarian, mostly organic, mostly vegan, has 95% waste diversion... all crafts are hand-made by the people who sell them; there are *lots* of education booths, workshops, and speakers; there is lots of local music and dance (two main music stages, one dj stage, one dance stage)... it's similar to oregon country faire in some ways, but on a smaller scale. 20-30,000 attendees each year over the three days.

i'm looking for people who are at least moderately skilled at poi, hoops, devil sticks, juggling, staff, et al. i don't have a budget this year, since it's the first year and i'm putting together a prototype, so i can't pay anyone. (yeah, i know, i'm lame. but it's a WONDERFUL festival that is on a super looooow budget and can never afford to pay anyone as much as they deserve. it is non-profit and non-debt and always just barely scrapes by, financially.)

the festival this year is may 6th, 7th, and 8th (which is mother's day weekend). the hours are: friday noon-10pm, saturday 9am-10pm, and sunday 9am-5pm. i'd like to have the toy space active between 10am and 5pm each day (except friday, obviously :).

no need to have a curriculum or any experience teaching, just a willingness to answer questions and help people around you.

is anyone interested? (and if you've already been talking to someone else on staff, let me know, k?)

extra notes:

-i'll also be looking for and hoping for extra toys to have around for people to play with.

-i'm not sure yet if i'll be able to have folks sell toys, but i can absolutely look into it if you're interested.

-if anyone's interested in doing fire, i'm also putting together the fire shows for the weekend. friday and saturday nights. and the headliners this year's saturday rock ass. so let me know :) (oh, and if you've every lit before, you qualify. i'll find a place for pretty much anyone to spin. no shortage of options.)

hope to hear from you all!!!

Woodland Burning Man Party Friday April 9th

I thought some of you Davisites might like to come join us for a Burning Man party that's in Woodland this Friday. It would be nice to get to know more local Burners around here and everyone would love to see some fire spinning. There will already be lots of food so just bring yourselves.

The party will be at 235 Williams St. (Take the Main St exit off of I 113 - Turn Left to California St (a couple of miles - a Carl's Jr is on the corner). Turn Right on Calif. two blocks to W. North and then turn Left 3 blocks to Williams ... it's easy to get to.)

call me at 666-3500 or 312-1091 if you need more info or directions.

Monday Night, a wee bit before sunset in the 'big kid's park.' Bring fire!

The park is located off of Russel blvd. turn onto Sycamore from Russel (there's only one way to do this). The first possible left turn is onto Wake Forest Dr. Go down Wake Forest past the bus stop (about a block and a half). You'll see a park on your left. Usually we meet near the picnic tables next to the play structure (kinda towards the back of the park). Parking sucks on this street, but maybe since it's a long weekend people will still be away.

See you there!
